This may be one of the last low mileage vaggen's available. Look at the outstanding condition of this low mileage, very rare and collectible, 1999 lightning blue viggen for $17,520 that was previously sold by swedish. Was the largest market with only 420 lightning blue copies sold, other parts of the world only got a few dozen 1999 models. Serious saab fans know that the swedish brand builds more than just cars. They also build some of the most sophisticated aircraft in the world. So when it came time to name their new, hopped-up version of the 9-3 coupe, they chose the name of one of their most famous fighter jets, the viggen. In english, the word viggen means thunderbolt. And to drivers used to the standard saab 9-3, this new viggen hits like a bolt out of the blue! And that said, we're sure it's no coincidence that the saab 9-3 viggen coupe came clothed in an eye-popping color dubbed, appropriately enough, lightning blue. But the viggen's real charge is found under its electric skin, in the form of a highly modified 4 cylinder powerplant. Using the current ecopower 2. 3 liter engine found in the 9-5 as their base, viggen engineers added an industrial strength mitsubishi turbocharger capable of boosting pressure to 20 psi. Freer breathing intake runners and a new exhaust system also aid the air-hungry turbo. The results are nothing less than stunning-225 horsepower and a neck-snapping 252 pound-feet of torque! That's just 6 pound-feet less than porsche's six cylinder powered 911. Now that much torque in a front driver can be a real handful. So to keep things from getting too scary, viggen torque meisters have electronically limited torque output in first gear to 184 pound-feet and 243 pound-feet in second. This helps overcome the inertia of the larger turbo and allows the engine to reach the desired torque level quicker. But there's more than just raw power and shocking hues separating the viggen from other saab 9-3s. There's also aggressive and aerodynamic styling to match. The deep front spoiler not only looks good, but serves to force much of the airflow over the body rather than letting it under the car where it creates lift. The pronounced rocker panels channel what airflow there is under the body to the rear, where it's integrated with the airflow coming off the rear wing. As a package, these aerodynamic accouterments reduce the viggen's co-efficient of drag by 8% to 0. 31, and drop lift forces at the rear wheels by 60%. To fully maximize the advantages of the viggen's road-hugging form, saab's special vehicle operations team joined forces with tom walkinshaw racing in tweaking the macpherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension. The coil springs at the corners have been lowered by 10 millimeters. Front springs were then stiffened 5%, while rears were stiffened over 25%. Damper valving and the anti-roll bars were also recalibrated. The result of this careful tweaking is very well balanced viggen handling. Turn ins are quick and precise, with a little push coming at the end of the corner. The steering has a nicely weighted feel, and the tight suspension keeps body roll during lateral transitions to a minimum, but does it without the harshness often associated with sport-tuned suspensions. One of the standout features of the saab 37 viggen fighter jet is its ability to land and stop in short distances. And those same qualities are found in the earthbound viggen as well. The saab classic 900 convertible is an icon on its own, but the icon-within-the-icon is the saab 900 monte carlo yellow version of the car. It's the most fun-looking color in the palette, but it still takes a certain strength of character to buy and own this most attention-grabbing and distinctive color. The #1 market by volume was the u. S., but they were sold in quite a few markets, though many of them had small numbers only. Not many left in the states. The original monte carlo yellow paint is practically flawless and could be mistaken for a show quality respray. The convertible top has been replaced and operates and looks like new. The gray leather looks and fees like new and the dash also looks new and has no cracks. This is truly a preserved time capsule! This clean carfax classic was purchased by the principle of a virginia saab dealer in 2003 for his personal collection and has been driven only 5,000 miles in 14 years. I remember a time when we bought cars to enjoy them and if we didn't lose money, that was a good car to own! People buy new cars all the time only to see their $120k bmw worth $40k in a not too distant future, but they buy those cars for the pleasure they derive from them. What it comes down to is the cost of an original monte carlo example, and the cost, time and stress it would cost to restore an example like this one in original condition. They kept the dimensions, the front-end sheet metal, and much of what was underneath it, but starting at the windshield, "we built a whole new car from there on back," according to one saab official. The convertibles will be built for saab by magna steyr in graz, austria, not in the swedish headquarters at trollhattan. They have tops that are tighter-fitting, better padded, and quieter than any previous convertible tops and that disappear behind the second seat. Cowls trail off the rear head restraints for a more sporty look. It is built around the 210-hp, 2. 0-liter ecotec corporate engine that puts out 221 pound-feet of torque, although saab uses only the ecotec block and provides all its own internals, turbocharging, and mapping. Its power will be more than adequate for most of saab's traditional turbo customers. It is equipped with electronic stability control, along with automatic rollover protection bars that deploy in 15 milliseconds. This convertible is 200 pounds heavier than the previous model, almost all of it in chassis and body reinforcements that make it almost 200-percent more resistant to twisting and bending, and it couldn't happen to a more deserving car. The old convertible had all the structural rigidity of shredded wheat and was prone to massive torque steer, especially the viggen version. That kind of ricketyness has been banished completely. Like no other epsilon-based car, the saab has passive rear-wheel steering built into the rear bushings, and it helps make the car feel sure-footed in everything from quick jinks to 100-mph sweepers.
